Doch wer hat hieran eigentlich Rechte und wie darf ich sie teilen und nachnutzen? Taucht in unserem dreitägigen Workshop ein in die Welt von Urheberrecht, Lizenzen und Gemeinfreiheit. Erhaltet eine verständliche und praxisnahe Erklärung, wann Forschungsdaten urheberrechtlich geschützt sind und welche Lizenzsysteme - von Creative Commons bis zu speziellen Softwarelizenzen - in der Forschung sinnvoll eingesetzt werden können. Entdeckt über das Urheberrecht hinaus eine Verbündete in der Guten Wissenschaftlichen Praxis. Übt anhand realer Beispiele, Lizenztexte zu verstehen, passende Lizenzen und public domain marks zu vergeben, um rechtliche Fallstricke zu vermeiden. Mit einer Mischung aus Impulsen, Diskussionen und praktischen Übungen vermittelt der Workshop das nötige Rüstzeug, um Daten rechtlich fundiert, verantwortungsvoll und zugleich offen zu nutzen und zu teilen. Workshop Announcement: Data Visualization for Biological Sciences (18–20 November 2025, online)

Dear Life Science Community, We are pleased to announce an upcoming workshop titled “Data Visualization for Biological Sciences<https://events.hifis.net/event/3045/overview>”, to be held online via Zoom from 18 to 20 November 2025. ________________________________ 🗓️ Overview & Goals In this practical, interactive course, you'll learn to create engaging, scientifically accurate visualizations specifically tailored for biological research. Using programming tools like R and Python, along with graphic editing software such as Inkscape, you'll gain essential skills for clearly and effectively visualizing genomic and biological data. Some prior programming experience is required for this course. Our aim is not to dive deeply into every coding detail, but rather to equip you with practical skills to adapt existing visualization scripts for your own data. Participants will collaborate in small groups (3-4 participants per group, about 10 groups), creating visualizations from provided datasets that cover topics like allele frequencies, mutation patterns, and other genomic data. Additionally, participants are encouraged to explore AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini for coding support, troubleshooting, and inspiration, as they work on their visualizations. We'll discuss effective and responsible ways to use such tools, addressing both their advantages and potential pitfalls. Each session concludes with group discussions and instructor-led feedback to help refine visualizations and deepen understanding of best practices, visualization design principles, and publication standards. This course is designed for PhD students, postdocs and early-career researchers in biology, bioinformatics, and related fields. While the concepts and skills taught are broadly applicable across the life sciences, our use cases and datasets are primarily drawn from genomics. ________________________________ 📋 What to Bring / Requirements * A laptop (Windows, macOS or Linux) with R and Python installed. Dear All, after our successful debut with our Survival Guide for Law and Ethics in Research, FAIRagro, NFDI4Biodiversity and NFDI4Earth present you another Episode all about CARE! *Date: 07.10.2025, 14:30 – 16:00* ** *Content: CARE-ing about Indigenous Data in a Wide World* Indigenous Data Sovereignty, Governance, and Ethics refers to the rights of indigenous peoples to manage their data (sovereignty) and how it’s used by others (governance). The terms build upon the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and is most widely known today through the acronym CARE: Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, Ethics. While these lofty principles may be universal, practical implementation is often bounded by the jurisdictions that the data lives in – who and where it was collected, where it will be analyzed, where it will be stored. In this workshop we will discuss Indigenous Data Sovereignty, Governance, and Ethics and how to apply the CARE Principles to your work. The German Network for Bioinformatics Infrastructure (de.NBI), alongside ELIXIR Germany, is building a robust Research Data Management (RDM) ecosystem for life sciences. They offer services, tools, and training, with a central component being the de.NBI Cloud. This federated national cloud, supported by the Competence Center for Cloud Technologies and Data Management (de.KCD), provides scalable compute and storage for big data and collaboration. The webinar offers a practical guide to the de.NBI Cloud, including the SimpleVM platform for easily managing virtual machines. Future efforts will focus on integrating the Cloud into RDM frameworks, implementing FAIR data principles, and expanding support for the secure and responsible handling of sensitive data. This webinar is aimed at students, early career researchers, clinicians, bioinformaticians and everyone interested in using the de.NBI Cloud. WiNoDa Winter School (Nov 24–28 2025): Data, Quality and Methods for Natural Science Collections

Dear colleagues, We are pleased to invite you to the WiNoDa Online Winter School 2025, a five‑day, interactive programme designed to build practical data skills for researchers, curators and students working with natural science, archaeology and biodiversity collections. About the Winter School * Dates: 24–28 November 2025 (online) * Organisers: German Federation for Biological Data (GFBio), Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (MfN), German Archaeological Institute (DAI) and the Vernetzungs‑ und Kompetenzstelle Open Access Brandenburg (VuK), in cooperation with NFDI4Biodiversity. * Goal: To provide a comprehensive introduction to research‑data management for object‑related datasets, covering the full data journey from data collection and standards to enrichment and publication * Format: Expert lectures and hands‑on sessions across biodiversity, palaeontology, archaeology and related fields. What you will learn Participants will work with real collection data and learn to: * Apply the FAIR data principles and meet data‑quality standards. * Navigate and harmonise diverse collection databases, including understanding data types, standards and persistent identifiers. * Enrich and visualise datasets and manage them efficiently using SQL. * Understand how open data and the data economy drive innovation : reuse of existing datasets saves time and money, avoids duplication of experiments and allows researchers to draw new insights without repeating costly data collection.
