Sechs neue Use Cases bei FAIRagro
Es ist soweit: im FAIRagro Konsortium <http://www.fairagro.net/> sind sechs
neue Use Cases und damit auch neue Participants an Bord, die zwischen
Herbst 2024 und Frühjahr 2025 starten und neben den sechs vorhandenen Use
Cases <https://fairagro.net/mitmachen/unsere-use-cases/> dazu beitragen,
weiterhin Fortschritte in der Entwicklung von Dateninfrastrukturen und
Services zu erzielen, die den Bedürfnissen der FAIRagro-Community gerecht
werden.
Unterstützt wurde FAIRagro bei der Evaluierung und Auswahl der Einreichungen
durch das FAIRagro Community Advisory Board (CAB)

, dessen Mitglieder und ihre internationale Expertise eine wertvolle Hilfe
gewesen sind.
Ausgewählt als zweijähriges Use Case Projekt wurde der Showcase
Next-Generation Environmental and extended Tools for Extreme Events & Plant
Resilience Assessment. Das Projekt wurde vom Leibniz-Zentrum für
Agrarlandschaftsforschung (ZALF) in Zusammenarbeit mit der Technischen
Universität München (TUM), dem Deutschen Wetterdienst (DWD) sowie der TU
Dresden und dem Deutschen Klimarechenzentrum als weitere assoziierte Partner
entwickelt. Es wurde im Rahmen des Konsortiums NFDI4Earth eingereicht. Im
Sinne der fachübergreifenden Konsolidierung der NFDI-Konsortien wird hier
erstmals exemplarisch die bereichsübergreifende Datenbereitstellung für
konkrete Anwendungen der Modellierung gezeigt.

Six new use cases at FAIRagro
The time has come: six new use cases - and thus also new participants - are
on board in <https://fairagro.net/en/> the FAIRagro consortium. They will
start between fall 2024 and spring 2025 and, in addition to the
<https://fairagro.net/en/participate/our-use-cases/> six existing use cases,
will contribute to further progress in the development of data
infrastructures and services that meet the needs of the FAIRagro community.
In the evaluation and selection of submissions FAIRagro was supported by the
<https://fairagro.net/en/participate/the-fairagro-community-advisory-board-c
ab/> FAIRagro Community Advisory Board (CAB), whose members and their
international expertise have been a valuable asset.
The use case Next-Generation Environmental and extended Tools for Extreme
Events & Plant Resilience Assessment was selected as a two-year use case
project. The project was developed by the Leibniz-Zentrum für
Agrarlandschaftsforschung (ZALF) in collaboration with the Technical
University of Munich (TUM), Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD), TU Dresden and
Deutsches Klimarechenzentrum as additional associated partners. It was
submitted as part of the NFDI4Earth consortium. In line with the
interdisciplinary consolidation of the NFDI consortia, this is the first
example of cross-sectoral data provision for specific modeling applications.

NFDI4Earth stärkt Zusammenarbeit mit re3data durch Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU)
Nach produktiven Diskussionen und Kooperationen in den letzten Jahren hat
<https://www.nfdi4earth.de/> NFDI4Earth eine Absichtserklärung mit dem
Registry of Research Repositories ( <https://www.re3data.org/> re3data)
unterzeichnet.
Durch die Bereitstellung eines nachhaltigen Dienstes für kuratierte
Repositorieninformationen spielt re3data eine wesentliche Rolle für
NFDI4Earth. Im Rahmen von NFDI4Earth wurde eine umfassende
Landschaftsanalyse der Repositorien für Erdsystemwissenschaften (ESS (Earth
System Sciences)) durchgeführt. Das Konsortium nutzte dies als ersten
Schritt, um mit nationalen Repository-Anbietern in Kontakt zu treten, um
re3data-Datensätze zu erstellen, zu aktualisieren oder zu verbessern.
Auf der Grundlage der Ergebnisse zur Verbesserung des von NFDI4Earth
entwickelten Knowledge Hub-Dienstes haben wir eine Pipeline implementiert,
die regelmäßig re3data sammelt. Die folgenden Schritte umfassen Diskussionen
über spezifische ESS-Anforderungen an Repository-Informationen und deren
Relevanz für die multidisziplinäre re3data-Gemeinschaft.
Beide Initiativen kamen überein, bei der Entwicklung von Metadatenschemata
zusammenzuarbeiten, die den Anforderungen der Geowissenschaftsgemeinschaft
entsprechen, und gemeinsam Metadaten für geowissenschaftliche Repositorien
zu aktualisieren und zu pflegen.
NFDI4Earth strengthens cooperation with re3data through Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU)
Following fruitful discussions and collaborations over the last few years,
NFDI4Earth <https://www.nfdi4earth.de/> signed an MoU with the registry of
research repositories (re3data <https://www.re3data.org/> ).
By providing a sustainable service for curated repository information,
re3data plays an essential role in NFDI4Earth. NFDI4Earth investigated a
comprehensive landscape analysis of Earth System Sciences (ESS)
repositories. The consortium used this as an initial step to engage with
national repository providers to create, update, or improve their re3data
records.
Taking the results to improve the NFDI4Earth-developed Knowledge Hub
service, we implemented a pipeline that regularly harvests re3data. The
following steps include discussions on specific ESS requirements on
repository information and their relevance for the multidisciplinary re3data
community.
Both initiatives agreed to collaborate on developing metadata schemas that
meet the Earth System Sciences communitys requirements and join forces in
updating and maintaining metadata for Earth System Sciences repositories.

A Letter of Intent was signed between the ESCAPE Open Collaboration and the
PUNCH4NFDI Consortium. This pivotal agreement marks a significant step
forward in our collective mission to enhance scientific data management and
open science at both national and international levels. The collaboration
between ESCAPE and PUNCH4NFDI sets the stage for the development of a robust
national and cluster node within the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC).

NFDI4Microbiota hat eine neue Vorlage für Datenmanagementpläne (DMP)

Forschende entwickelt wurde, die mit mikrobiologischen Daten arbeiten. Die
NFDI4Microbiota Edition erleichtert den Datenmanagementprozess, indem sie

New Data Management Plan Template Published

specifically for researchers working with microbiological data. The template
simplifies the data management process by guiding users through a series of
straightforward questions. Once completed, the template helps produce a

The four-color theorem was the first major theorem in pure mathematics,
whose proof relied on the use of a computer. Its development, the reactions
it generated, and its long-term impact highlight the increasing relevance of
a research data perspective in modern mathematics. In the main article of
the newsletter, you can explore this topic further, and in our Data Date
interview you meet Yves Bertot, a computer scientist who maintains the
official GitHub repository for the Coq implementation of the theorem. The

Zotero4NFDI: Kooperation von NFDI4Ing und Text+
Im Text+ Office werden regelmäßig Python-Skripte entwickelt, um verschiedene
Tätigkeiten zu automatisieren. Diese umfassen beispielsweise das Auslesen
von Inhalten aus Tabellen und Datenbanken oder die Auswertung von
Nutzungsdaten der Social-Media-Kanäle. Ähnliche Ansätze werden auch im
NFDI-Konsortium NFDI4Ing verfolgt.
Da es eine Vielzahl von Skripten gibt, die in beiden Konsortien entwickelt
und genutzt werden, liegt es nahe, dass auch andere NFDI-Konsortien von der
Nutzung dieser Skripte profitieren könnten. Vor diesem Hintergrund planen
Text+ und NFDI4Ing die gemeinsame Veröffentlichung ihrer Skripte in Form von
Umbrella-Publikationen.
Als erste Veröffentlichung wurden Skripte zum Auslesen einzelner oder aller
Publikationen aus einer Zotero-Bibliothek hochgeladen, da beide Konsortien
die Metadaten ihrer Publikationen systematisch in eigenen
Zotero-Bibliographien speichern. Die Veröffentlichungen von Text+ sind unter
https://zenodo.org/records/12605448 (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.12605448) und die

Zotero4NFDI: Cooperation between NFDI4Ing and Text+
Python-based scripts are regularly developed in the Text+ Office to automate
various activities. These include, for example, reading content from
multiple tables and databases or evaluating usage data from social media
channels. Similar approaches are also followed in the NFDI consortium
NFDI4Ing.
As there are a large number of scripts that are developed and used in both
consortia, it is likely that other NFDI consortia could also benefit from
the use of these scripts. With this in mind, Text+ and NFDI4Ing plan to
jointly publish their scripts.
As a first publication, scripts for reading individual or all publications
from a Zotero library have been uploaded, as both consortia systematically
store the metadata of their publications in their own Zotero bibliographies.

Fokus auf Bildgebung und Mikroskopiedaten-Management beim Compact Symposium
der Gesellschaft für Biochemie und Molekularbiologie
Am 26. und 27. September fand in Frankfurt das Compact Symposium der
Gesellschaft für Biochemie und Molekularbiologie (GBM) statt. Die
Veranstaltung bot ein spannendes Programm, das aus Kurzvorträgen von
Nachwuchswissenschaftler:innen, Posterpräsentationen und Keynote-Vorträgen
führender Wissenschaftler:innen bestand, die bahnbrechende
Bildgebungsverfahren für die biologische Forschung entwickeln und anwenden.
Auf Einladung der GBM hat das Konsortium NFDI4BIOIMAGE gemeinsam mit dem
Projekt I3D:bio (Information Infrastructure for BioImage Data) zwei
Workshops angeboten. Der erste Workshop behandelte das
Forschungsdatenmanagement im Bereich der biologischen Bildgebung und stellte
Werkzeuge für die praktische Umsetzung vor. Der zweite Workshop gab
wertvolle Tipps zur Auswahl der passenden Mikroskopie-Methode für
spezifische Forschungsfragen. Während der gesamten Veranstaltung hatten die
Teilnehmer:innen die Möglichkeit, sich am Informationsstand von
NFDI4BIOIMAGE mit den Data Stewards über ihre individuellen Fragen und
Bedürfnisse im Forschungsdatenmanagement auszutauschen.
Für NFDI4BIOIMAGE ist der kontinuierliche, enge Austausch mit der
wissenschaftlichen Gemeinschaft von großer Bedeutung. So können neue Tools
und Best Practices zielgerichtet entwickelt werden, um das

Focus on Imaging and Microscopy Data Management at the Compact Symposium of
the Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
On September 26-27, the Compact Symposium of the Society for Biochemistry
and Molecular Biology (GBM) took place in Frankfurt. The event offered an
exciting program that included short talks by early-career scientists,
poster presentations, and keynote lectures by leading scientists who are
developing and applying groundbreaking imaging techniques for biological
research.
At the invitation of the GBM, the NFDI4BIOIMAGE consortium, together with
the I3D:bio
(Information Infrastructure for BioImage Data) project, organized two
workshops. The first workshop focused on research data management in the
field of biological imaging and presented tools for practical
implementation. The second workshop provided valuable tips on how to choose
the right microscopy method for specific research questions. Throughout the
event, participants had the opportunity to exchange with the NFDI4BIOIMAGE
data stewards at the information booth and discuss their individual
questions and needs related to research data management.
For NFDI4BIOIMAGE, continuous and close interaction with the scientific
community is of great importance. It is essential to effectively develop new
tools and best practices that specifically advance research data management
in biological imaging.

NFDI4BIOIMAGE Teilprojekt zu VDI beim 10. bwHPC Symposium vorgestellt
Das Teilprojekt zur Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), das darauf
abzielt, den Fernzugriff auf vollständige Desktop-Umgebungen für
Datenanalyse und Visualisierung großer Datensätze zu ermöglichen, wurde beim
10. bwHPC Symposium (High-Performance Computing Baden-Württemberg) am 25.
und 26. September in Freiburg vorgestellt

Eines stellte die allgemeine Architektur des vorgeschlagenen
Fernzugriff-Gateways vor, und das andere erläuterte die Prozesse zur
Framebuffer-Erfassung, Kodierung und SPICE-Übertragung. Zusätzlich wurde ein
Lightning Talk zu den Anforderungen für die Langzeitplanung in OpenStack in
verschiedenen VDI-Anwendungsfällen gehalten.
Zudem präsentierte das Team einen funktionsfähigen Prototyp des
Zugangsgateways, der den effektiven Fernzugriff auf Cloud-basierte virtuelle
Maschinen (VMs) mit 3D-Rendering-Fähigkeiten demonstriert. Diese Ergebnisse
stellen einen wichtigen Fortschritt in der Entwicklung von
Open-Source-Lösungen für Virtual Desktop Infrastructures dar.

NFDI4BIOIMAGE subproject on VDI showcased at the 10th bwHPC Symposium
The Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) subproject, aimed at enabling
remote access to complete desktop environments for data analysis and
visualization near large data sets, was showcased at the 10th bwHPC
Symposium (High-Performance Computing Baden-Württemberg), held on September
25-26 in Freiburg ( <https://indico.scc.kit.edu/event/3981/>
https://indico.scc.kit.edu/event/3981/). The team presented two posters: one
outlining the general architecture of the proposed remote access gateway and
another detailing the processes of framebuffer capture, encoding, and SPICE
transport. Additionally, a lightning talk was delivered on the requirements
for long-term scheduling in OpenStack across various VDI use cases.
The team also demonstrated a functional prototype of the access gateway,
highlighting its effective remote access to cloud-hosted virtual machines
(VMs) with 3D rendering capabilities. These results render an important step
forward in the development of open-source solutions for Virtual Desktop
Infrastructures.

NFDI beim Open Science Festival in Mainz
Unter dem Motto Meet, Share, Inspire, Care fand das 3. Open Science Festival
am 17. Und 18. September in Mainz statt. NFDI, mehrere Konsortien und unser
Projekt FAIR Data Spaces waren mit einem gemeinsamen Stand und Postern
vertreten. Außerdem gab es zwei inspirierende Ignite Talks mit NFDI-Bezug:

Computational Archaeology domain (Florian Thiery, NFDI4Objects) und The
FAIRytale of Base4NFDI (Antje Manske, Base4NFDI). Die beiden Tage boten

NFDI at the Open Science Festival in Mainz
The 3rd Open Science Festival took place in Mainz on 17 and 18 September

project FAIR Data Spaces were represented with a joint booth and posters.
There were also two inspiring NFDI-related Ignite Talks: The daily
challenges while working in the Digital Humanities / Computational
Archaeology domain (Florian Thiery, NFDI4Objects) and The FAIRytale of
Base4NFDI (Antje Manske, Base4NFDI). The two days offered many
opportunities for networking and demonstrated the opportunities offered by a
cultural shift towards FAIR data and Open Science.
